Hoop Style

These bold dangle earrings combine gothic sensibilities and historical significance.

On March 5, 1770, British soldiers from the 29th Regiment garrisoned in Boston opened fire on a crowd of colonists, resulting in the deaths of five individuals. The American press framed the tragedy as the Boston Massacre and it fueled growing anti-British sentiments in the American colonies.

The week after the event the Boston Gazette printed in dark black ink the images of four coffins describing the reaction to the event. Stark against the pale paper, the somber shapes bore the initials of the four men killed that night, providing a chilling specificity to the deaths. In their death and on the pages of history Samuel Gray, Samuel Maverick, James Caldwell, and Crispus Attucks became more than merely nameless victims of British oppression. Days later a fifth victim, William Carr, succumbed to his wounds, adding another to a roster seen by many as the first martyrs of the American Revolution.

These earrings feature the iconic coffin images in black acrylic with hand-inked white etching.

This item is packaged in a beautiful black gift box with the original period imagery and historical information vetted by a museum curator. The box is perfect for gifting or storage!
